“Let the people rule,” was 1828’s presidential candidate Andrew Jackson’s slogan, which made nay-sayers respond by bringing the donkey to the forefront of politics. Famous political cartoonist Thomas Nash immortalized the lampooning in a Harper’s Weekly cartoon and the rest is history.
